Knock Knock Eye: Would You Trust a Doctor Trained in Less Time?
Manage episode 504325474 series 3425807
This week’s Knock Knock Eye is a little bit of everything: football, birthdays, med school reform, and one of the strangest kinds of patients I see in clinic. I talk about turning 40 (and yes, going full Chiefs fan at Arrowhead), why the fourth year of med school might be a “victory lap” worth keeping, and how Europe might actually be ahead of us when it comes to training doctors. Plus, I share what it was like speaking to med students about healthcare advocacy and why I think universal care will only happen through small, stepwise changes. And finally, we get clinical: how do you handle a patient who insists they can’t see a single photon of light, when your exam says otherwise? Spoiler: it’s not about calling them a faker.
Takeaways:
Why shortening med school to three years sounds efficient but could backfire for future physicians.
How European six-year combined programs might be a smarter way forward.
The advice I gave to bright-eyed med students about fighting for change without burning out.
Why I think universal healthcare in the U.S. will only come from incremental reforms, not sweeping legislation.
Inside the exam room: how ophthalmologists test for non-physiologic vision loss—and why reassurance beats accusation every time.
