Mercy Rye, high school freshman and aspiring marine biologist, discovers a ragged bit of tentacle from a species she can’t identify. She takes it home, hoping to score some extra credit with her favorite teacher, but soon regrets dropping it into her aquarium. It kills her fish, wrecks the tank, and grows at a staggering rate—no “bonus points” are worth this! When it escapes and slips into the storm drains, she thinks that’s the last she’ll see of it...but then squirrels, cats, and dogs start disappearing. Mercy knows no adult will believe her—she has to take action before the specimen starts killing people. She fills her backpack with supplies, hops on her bike, and goes hunting.
