In this episode, we are going to talk about Hope and Hope Theory and the importance of cultivating hope in your life. The last quote by Christopher Reeve, “once you choose hope, anything’s possible”, is the foundation of this episode. Having hope, creating hope, openness towards hope, is a choice that we can all make, at any time. As we’ll see, making that choice makes all the difference in the world.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Hope has three distinct parts according to Richard Snyder: goals, agency and pathways.

  • Goals are the “cornerstone of hope”.
  • Agency, also known as willpower, is what keeps you believing you can achieve your goals as well as stay motivated to reach those goals.
  • Pathways, or waypower, are the routes you choose to take in reaching your goals. When one pathway doesn’t end up working, you troubleshoot and problem solve to find a new pathway.

BEST MOMENTS

The capacity for hope is the most significant fact of life. It provides human beings with a sense of destination, and the energy to get started. –Norman Cousins

Hope is not blind optimism. It’s not ignoring the enormity of the tasks ahead or the roadblocks that stand in our path…Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it and to work for it and to fight for it.

― Barack Obama

Once you choose hope, anything’s possible.

― Christopher Reeve
