One of the biggest punyas (merits) is to have krpa (kindness), wherein one which is one who follows the right actions, marked by selflessness and devoid of calculation. Krpa is also defined as grace: By engaging in activities that bring us joy, we are able to feel more grace. When we feel more grace, we and can remember and appreciate those who have been kind to us, making it easier to then channeling that joy and gentleness to those that we care for.
