An explosion occurred in an apartment building in southwest Moscow on Sunday evening, followed by a fire that spread across two floors, local officials said.
Two people were killed in the blast and fire, their bodies found on a ninth-floor balcony, according to Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry. Five others were injured, including two children. The Telegram channels Mash and Baza reported that three people had died.
According to the state news agency TASS, the epicenter was an apartment on the ninth floor, which was destroyed along with part of the building’s roof. The fire broke out in apartments on the eighth and ninth floors, where the floor between them collapsed.
Residents were evacuated and taken to a temporary shelter set up nearby.
By around 11 p.m. local time, emergency officials said the fire had been extinguished. However, on Monday morning, Baza reported that smoldering had resumed, fanned by strong winds. Fire crews had not yet resumed work due to the threat of further collapse.
Officials have not given a cause for the explosion. A source in the emergency services, cited by Interfax, said the blast may have been caused by a gas cylinder.
