Russia and Ukraine have carried out another prisoner exchange, both sides confirmed.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said that a “group of Russian servicemen” had returned from Ukrainian captivity but did not specify how many. The repatriated soldiers are currently in Belarus, where they are receiving psychological and medical care.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the exchange included members of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, and the Border Guard Service. Most had been in captivity since 2022, he noted, though he also did not disclose the number of people involved.

During talks in Istanbul, the two sides agreed to exchange severely wounded soldiers and prisoners between the ages of 18 and 25, and to repatriate the remains of 6,000 fallen soldiers each. A prisoner exchange involving individuals under 25 took place on June 9, followed by additional rounds on June 10 and 12 that included the seriously wounded. Russia has also transferred the bodies of just over 6,000 Ukrainian soldiers in several phases.

At a meeting with foreign journalists on June 18, President Vladimir Putin said Russia had handed over 6,000 bodies to Ukraine and received 57 in return. “We’re prepared to return another 3,000,” he said. “These are tragic numbers, but still a positive outcome of the negotiations.”
