Putin and Macron hold first phone call in nearly three years

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with French President Emmanuel Macron, the Kremlin reported on its website.
Moscow described the conversation as “substantive,” saying it focused on the conflict between Iran and Israel as well as the war in Ukraine.
“In discussing the situation in and around Ukraine, Vladimir Putin noted that the Ukrainian conflict is a direct consequence of the policies of Western states, which for many years ignored Russia’s security interests, created an anti-Russian foothold in Ukraine, condoned violations of the rights of Russian-speaking residents, and are now pursuing a course aimed at prolonging hostilities by supplying the Kyiv regime with various types of modern weaponry,” the Kremlin’s readout of the call said.
Macron’s press office confirmed the call, saying it lasted more than two hours and covered both the war in Ukraine and Iran’s nuclear program. According to the statement, the French president called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and the start of negotiations.
This was the first phone call between Putin and Macron since September 2022. The two leaders had maintained direct contact during the early months of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Macron said in February 2025 that he remained willing to speak with Putin “when it is appropriate in the course of negotiations.”
