A veteran of Russia’s war in Ukraine, Zaur Gurtsiev, was killed in an explosion in Stavropol, Russia. After returning from the front, Gurtsiev joined the “Time of Heroes” program — a Kremlin initiative aimed at placing war veterans in government roles — and was serving as the city’s first deputy mayor. His death was announced by Stavropol Krai Governor Vladimir Vladimirov.
According to the governor, Gurtsiev died “as a result of a nighttime incident on Chekhov Street,” without elaborating on the nature of the incident. He added that law enforcement and security agencies were working at the scene. “All possible scenarios are being considered, including a terrorist attack involving Nazis from Ukraine,” Vladimirov said.
Earlier, Stavropol Mayor Ivan Ulyanchenko reported that “a loud bang” had occurred near a residential building on Chekhov Street, killing two men. Telegram channels Mash and Shot suggested that a grenade had likely been detonated. Several cars were damaged in the blast.
Gurtsiev, 34, joined the “Time of Heroes” program in May 2024. According to the program’s website, he had overseen the air component of Russia’s operation to seize Mariupol and had received multiple awards, including one “for Avdiivka” in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, where heavy fighting took place. In September of that year, he was appointed first deputy head of the Stavropol city administration.
