Trump administration asked Ukraine to take third-country nationals deported from U.S. — The Washington Post
Manage episode 481086365 series 3381925
In late January, the Trump administration proposed that Ukrainian authorities accept an “unspecified number” of third-country nationals deported from the United States, The Washington Post reported, citing relevant documents.
The proposal was delivered through a senior American diplomat. The documents do not indicate how Kyiv responded, noting only that a Ukrainian diplomat told the U.S. Embassy that Ukraine would reply after forming an official position on the matter.
Two Ukrainian officials familiar with the situation told The Washington Post that the issue had not been discussed at the highest levels of government. One said he did not know of any “political demands” from Washington tied to the request. The outlet also noted that Ukraine has not accepted any third-country nationals deported from the US.
The Washington Post described the proposal as “extraordinary,” given that Ukraine remains in the midst of an active war.
Several other countries — including El Salvador, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama — have agreed to accept third-country nationals deported from the U.S. As The Washington Post notes, the Trump administration offered financial incentives to some of those countries, while pressuring others with the threat of trade tariffs.
