Trump considering new sanctions on Russia this week — The Wall Street Journal
Manage episode 485233507 series 3381925
U.S. President Donald Trump is considering imposing new sanctions on Russia as early as this week, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
According to the sources, Trump has become increasingly frustrated with the slow pace of peace negotiations and with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ongoing strikes on Ukraine.
One source noted that the new sanctions would likely not target the banking sector, but that other ways to pressure Putin are under discussion. The Wall Street Journal did not specify what measures are being considered.
The sources also said Trump is growing impatient with the talks and is weighing whether to abandon the process altogether if the latest efforts fail.
Commenting on Russia’s large-scale strike on Ukraine on May 25, Trump said he was unhappy with Putin’s actions and that the Russian president was “needlessly killing a lot of people.” He added that, in his view, Putin had “gone absolutely CRAZY.”
The Kremlin attributed Trump’s remarks to “emotional overload.”
