008 - White Privilege, Cultural Appropriation and White-washing in the Spiritual Community
Manage episode 343758752 series 3239492
This week the duo are back with a topic that’s terrifying to many and contended with by few, until recently: White Privilege! What is it, exactly, and how can we best use it to tear down the systems of oppression that unfairly affect our Black and Brown siblings? Lorena and Kelly explore how their privilege has affected and ultimately skewed their perception of the world (or, at least as Lorena would say, this particular hallucination) by sharing stories about how they, too, were once blind to the injustices that our friends of colour survive through every. single. day. Kelly dives into cultural appropriation and how it works as a tool to uphold racist stereotypes, and Lorena digs into how white-washed the spirituality community is and how activism is and always SHOULD be a cornerstone of any true spiritual practice. The pair wrap up the podcast with a discussion on white fragility and Black emotional labour, and how necessary it is that white folk use their privilege for GOOD so that we can all truly live as one.
