Beach Lovers, Brace Yourselves! The surf report is in, and it's a wild ride out there today.
Mother Nature's serving up a coastal cocktail of high rip current risks and choppy seas along the New York coastline. From Brooklyn to the Hamptons, our beaches are locked in an east wind embrace, blowing a steady 15 to 20 miles per hour.
Surf height is hovering around 3 to 4 feet - enough to make things interesting but definitely not for the faint of heart. Water temperatures are lingering in the upper 60s, and the sky? Think dramatic - cloudy with a side of potential rain.
Serious warning: Rip currents are no joke today. Lifeguards are basically begging beach-goers to stay out of the surf. If you're thinking about challenging these waters, think again. These currents are life-threatening and ready to play rough.
UV index is low, so at least the sun won't be adding insult to potential injury. Tide schedules are varied across locations, with most low tides hitting around midday.
Quick safety reminder: If you somehow find yourself caught in a rip current, don't panic. Float, not fight. Swim parallel to the shore, and if you can't escape, wave and yell for help.
Sunrise was early this morning, sunset comes around 6:40 PM, giving you plenty of daylight to enjoy the beach - just from the safety of the sand.
Coastal crews will resume forecasts next year before Memorial Day weekend. Stay safe, stay smart, and respect the ocean's power today!
