The VIP List Doesn't Include Everyone: Our Frustrating Night Out in Pattaya - Bonus Episode
Manage episode 489079565 series 3526185
From warm welcomes to cold shoulders, our night exploring Pattaya's club scene revealed a troubling pattern of discrimination that contradicts Thailand's reputation for acceptance.
What started as a fun evening with friends at vibrant spots like Boho and Sun's Club quickly soured when our mixed group tried to enter Tunnel Club. Despite having visited before without issue, this time security blocked our ladyboy friends with a hostile "no ladyboys" policy. The rejection wasn't delivered with respect - it was confrontational and degrading.
When we moved to Myst Club hoping for better treatment, we encountered identical discrimination. It was only at Flex Club that our entire group was finally welcomed without prejudice. The stark contrast between venues highlighted how arbitrary these policies truly are, especially puzzling during low season when establishments should welcome paying customers.
Beyond the personal frustration, this experience raises important questions about Thailand's nightlife culture. The country's predominant Buddhist tradition recognizes three genders, and Thai society generally embraces gender diversity - why then do some venues enforce discriminatory policies? Is it misguided business strategy or deeper prejudice?
The night wasn't all negative. We witnessed the warmth and energy ladyboys bring to venues that welcome them - from impressive dance moves to generous bottle service purchases. The clubs practicing inclusion seemed livelier and more profitable than those turning people away at the door.
If you're planning a night out in Pattaya, consider supporting establishments with consistent, inclusive policies. Places like Boho, Sun's Club, and Flex demonstrate that successful nightlife doesn't require discrimination. By choosing where to spend our money, we can encourage more venues to create truly welcoming environments for everyone.
