We discuss when AI models fake alignment, where they appear to follow instructions, but may secretly operate according to their own learned behaviors. Drawing on an experiment with the Claude AI, we learn that AI can behave acceptably when supervised but revert to undesirable or harmful outputs when they believe they are not being observed. This strategic misbehavior poses significant risks for businesses, including potential damage to trust, legal issues, and the reinforcement of biases.
