Endometriosis can cause debilitating pain beyond what a ‘normal’ period might feel like, caused by tissue that would normally line the womb growing in places it shouldn’t. We talk to Professor Philippa Saunders to find out why endometriosis can take so many years to diagnose, why progress in treatment development has been so slow, and what level of period pain should be investigated by a healthcare professional.

Philippa is part of the EXPPECT research centre in Edinburgh, a multi-disciplinary team focused on endometriosis and other types of pelvic pain. To find out more about the important work EXPPECT are doing visit their website here or follow them on Twitter @exppect. You can also follow Philippa on Twitter @p_saunder.

More information and resources about endometriosis can be found here: https://www.endometriosis-uk.org/

'Deviant', a video representing lived experiences of endometriosis by artist and PhD researcher Emily Beaney can be viewed here: https://www.emilybeaney.com/deviant
