Episode Description: Jessica B. Harris may have been born and raised in New York City, but she has Tennessee roots through her father and has spent much of her life split between homes in the Northeast and the South – specifically New Orleans. For more than fifty years, she has been a college professor, a writer, and a lecturer, and her many books have earned her a reputation as an authority on food of the African Diaspora, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the James Beard Foundation. A few years back, Netflix adapted her book, High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America , into a 4 part docuseries. And I’m very proud to say that she’s a longtime contributor to Southern Living with a regular column called The Welcome Table. This episode was recorded in the Southern Living Birmingham studios, and Sid and Jessica talked about her mother’s signature mac and cheese, the cast-iron skillet she’d be sure to save if ever her house were on fire, and her dear friend, the late New Orleans chef Leah Chase. In light of Jesus' example and with his power, look beyond yourself to joyfully acknowledge, value, and help others.
Whenever God says, “No” it is for your best. Submit to his will and you will experience righteousness, peace, and joy that transcends temporary happiness.
No matter how busy, weary, or numb you may feel, you can be strengthened, encouraged, and revitalized by answering Jesus’ loving call to come away with him.
Run to God by faith. Even though you may experience hardship along the race it is worth it for running by faith in God is the only race which results in abundant, everlasting life.
Consider anew God’s glorious gift of salvation in Jesus. Then let that encourage you, change you, and guide you and your interactions with others this coming year.
Given the propensity for each of us to deceive and be deceived, we need God’s help. God enables you to hear the truth, discern the truth, and pass it on to others.
You were meant for more than this world offers. Your home is meant to be with God who created you and loves you. Though it can be hard in a world that is hostile to God, reconcile with God by trusting Jesus as your savior. Then invite others home with you.
Speaking and acting out of line with what is good, right, and loving causes a disconnect with the reality you were meant to experience. It separates you from God and others. With God’s help you don’t have to live that way.
Let God change you for the best through the reading of his written word, the Bible.
