Marlowe receives a call from Mrs. Corrie Gilbert. She says that her husband Ross will be at 3806 Melrose Avenue in twenty minutes, and that means trouble. Please hurry and see who my husband is meeting. Mrs. Gilbert gives Marlowe his description, their home address, and phone number. He arrives at the Melrose address and sees that it was an unfinished house. He then sees Ross Gilbert taking a beating from a thin man with a thick beard. The thick bearded man then gets into a car and Marlowe follows him to the Camden Arms Court. The man gets out and knocks on the door of bungalow number four. No one answered, so he left a message in the mailbox, and drove off. Marlowe went to see what the message contained. It had a phone number on one side, and said "Payment delivered OK - Plumber" on the other.
