The word "triggered" is often thrown around as an insult these days, demonstrating a lack of empathy toward those people, places, objects, and events that can cause some of us to exhibit what used to be called the fight-or-flight response. In recent years, two additional possibilities – freeze and fawn – have been tacked on. Most of us can point to something or someone in our lives that even if it happened years ago will still trigger us into a minor or major panic. I detail one of mine here – the loss of a close friendship – and what I try to do to control the freeze response when the trigger is unavoidable.
