The status of Afrikaans as an indigenous South African language has long been a contentious matter not only within the Afrikaans speech community itself, but also within the wider South African speech community. Since its inception, Afrikaans has been weighed down with various negative connotations, such as “colonial language”, “language of the oppressor” and “white man’s language”.
