Soaring specialist fees leave Australians hundreds of dollars out of pocket

Nearly two million Australians are delaying or skipping specialist care, forced to choose between extortionate fees or months-long waitlists.

That's according to a new Grattan Institute report out today, that reveals some private specialists are charging up to three times the Medicare fee for their services, with one in ten patients left almost 600-dollars out of pocket.

Meanwhile public waitlists are stretching months beyond the recommended limits, especially in rural areas and lower socio-economic communities.
