Welcome to Historically St Pete, a weekly conversation where we explore the truths, and myths of the people and events that created the Sunshine City. Host Rui Farias is the Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History. Located on the St. Pete Pier, the Museum of History has been sharing the stories of the Sunshine City for 102 years, and now we’re happy to share them you.
TODAY'S GUEST: Jessy Breckenridge. Currently the Museum of History’s Archives & Collections Manager curated our women’s exhibit: "Meddling – The Women Who Built St. Petersburg."
TODAY'S STORY: In just about every book written on the history of St. Petersburg, you’re going to read a lot about pioneers and founders, and they’re going to have names like John Williams, Peter Demens, John Donaldson, or John Bethell. But not a lot of Mary’s, Martha’s or Sarah’s. But history is always revolving. More like the deeper we dig, the more information we find that was left out, or even incorrectly shared. Take the story of St. Petersburg. We have been told that John Constantine Williams and Peter Demens were the founders, or fathers of the Sunshine City. But now, thanks to our guest, we know that the city has a founding mother. Yes, you’re hearing it here first. We’re crowning Sarah Williams Armistead our Founding Mother.
Tune-in weekly to Radio St. Pete.com for Farias' fascinating podcast and stop by the St. Petersburg Museum of History on your next visit to the St. Pete Pier and explore the rich and unique history of the Sunshine City. From exhibits to historic trolley and boat tours, happy hour with historian lectures and Perry's Porch! EVENTS
