Lunchtime Conversation host Nanette Wiser chatted with Erick Edwards’ (aka Bickford “Bick” Penn), who pursued his dream to be an author after retiring as a biostatistician. Inspired by the great English poets, especially William Blake and William Wordsworth and the novels of Charles Dickens, Hemingway, and John Steinbeck, he spent three years working on "The Trouble with Telling," published this spring by St. Petersburg Press.
ABOUT THE BOOK Weary of whodunits? Looking for something daringly different?
How about a quirky mystery/romance with a heady premise? To wit, discovering the root of one’s subconscious desires. No murders to solve here, but a socially challenged Army Specialist’s struggles with his uncontrollable impulses could lead to death by embarrassment. Meanwhile, a geeky but gutsy first-year college student gets even with her devious boss by undermining his illicit activities. Two tales of woe and intrigue have been woven into one. The Trouble with Telling is a coming-of age story about perceptions, misperceptions, and the pain of personal growth. The truth is out there…maybe.
SAYS THE AUTHOR: "While an undergraduate, Biology, Math, and English Literature were my favorite subjects. I attempted to become a poet/songwriter, but it didn’t pan out. After graduating, I spent the next several years working full time as a lab tech and taking graduate-level science courses in the evenings. I eventually stumbled into statistics. After getting my PhD from Virginia Commonwealth University, I spent nearly 30 years working in the field of organ transplantation as a biostatistician. My research was published in NEJM, JAMA, and numerous transplant journals. I retired in 2017. Because of our love of warm weather, Salvador Dali, and baseball, my wife and I moved to downtown St. Petersburg in 2019. I now had time to write!"
