GARDENING in FLORIDA host Nanette Wiser welcomes UF/IFAS Extension Theresa Badurek Urban Horticulture Agent/Master Gardener Program Leader and Certified Arborist FL-1307A for UF/IFAS Extension, Pinellas County as a new regular guest on our series. [email protected] https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/
She and the UF/IFAS Extension podcast team will be sharing their expert advice on Florida friendly gardening and wildlife. In this episode, Theresa and I talk about birds in the garden, their importance to the garden and eco-system and what plants/flowers attract them. "One of the most beautiful results of a healthy landscape is planting trees and other plants that attract birds. The more advantages your landscape offers to birds, the more likely they will make your yard a permanent home. Birds will make their home in areas that offer them food, water, and shelter, so incorporate plants and other necessities that will encourage birds to set up housekeeping in your yard. Make sure to include plants that are food sources throughout the year. Different species have different needs. Some birds like to eat the fruit or berries from a plant while others are nectar feeders, feeding on the nectar from flowers, while others prefer the seeds from ornamental grasses."
**Some considerations: Be careful when planting near a driveway, sidewalk, or patio as some plants can create a mess from fallen fruit. Planting native species offers the best chance of attracting native birds.
