In this episode of Sounds of Healing, Alvinette Downing - President of the Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association (ADTBJA) - talks with RSP News Director Nanette Wiser about her dad AL & Mom Bunny in advance of the annual Al Downing Honors at The Palladium July 20 4pm. We also hear a song her father wrote for her mother, "Bunny," and their journey in love, life, faith and music is truly inspiring. Says Alvinette about the song: "My father composed the instrumental “Bunny” for his sweet wife and my mother, Bunny. I don’t know the year he wrote it. Also, in the 80’s, my mother insisted that my father record music for her funeral because she only wanted him to play during the service. My father passed in 2000 but recorded a tape for her long before he died, as she had requested and we played it for my mother’s celebration of life when she passed in 2011." **By proclamation in 2023, the City of St. Petersburg Arts, Culture and Tourism acknowledges, celebrates and recognizes July 19th as Al Downing Day of St. Petersburg. Mr. Alvin Joseph Downing (1916-2000), Jazz Music Icon, was a Tuskegee Airman, Professor of Music at Gibbs High School and St. Petersburg College and known as the Ambassador of Jazz by the Clearwater Jazz Holiday Foundation.
