In this episode of Good Deeds, host Nanette Wiser talks with Carrie Auerbach, President of Run for the Beaches 5th year on December 6, 2025. Last year's storms interrupted this City of Treasure Island fundraiser, but it's back and bigger than ever. The event benefits local sustainability and environmental initiatives specific to Treasure Island a unique ecological treasure and home to diverse seabird and marine life (including endangered sea turtles). It's a passion and a volunteer effort she shares with the City of TI; Auerbach is also President of Treasure Island Adopt-a-Beach, organized July 2020, and partners with Keep Pinellas Beautiful.
ABOUT THE EVENT For competitive runners and walkers, this is an out-and-back chip-timed 5K. For a slower pace, enjoy a 1-mile Fun Run or Walk—a great way to soak in the sea air and enjoy the sound of the waves. Gather family and friends for this fun event, or come solo and make new friends! Little ones can burn off their morning energy in the Kids 100-meter Turtle Dash—a fun and fast sprint just for kids!
Finish off with a cool race shirt, medal, live music, local food tastings, and a complimentary beer, seltzer, or mimosa —all included with registration! In addition to good swag, there are non-profit booths educating the runners and public about sustainability and No Filter Band plays from 8:30am - 12:30pm. In just five years, this unique 5K and fun run/walk, starting just after sunrise on the hard-packed shoreline of Treasure Island’s beautiful beaches has come to attract over 400 hundred race participants from central Florida and beyond. More than $26,000, has been donated to local environmentally focused non-profits, wildlife rescue & rehab, beach clean-ups, and numerous community improvement projects. More than 600+ race participants are anticipated in 2025. It's a massive volunteer all-hands-on-deck mission leading up to Dec. 6 to get ready! Says Auerbach: "We just dedicated a filtered, chilled water refill station at Gulf Front Lot with intentions of installing more around the Island! This year, we will be at Gulf Front Lot (due to the closed Thunderbird), so we have a lot of work to do!"
WHAT'S NEW: This year a delicious addition is the Taste of Treasure Island – a restaurant-only sponsorship with many local favorites already signed up for the fun including Sea Dog's Restaurant TI , Sloppy Joes, Caddy's, Foxy, R Bar, Ricky T, Britt's Pizza Middle Grounds, Ricky T's, Dunkin Donuts, Boatdega and Bella's Bagels.
