A Fireside chat with Prophet Meshach Harvey - E86
Manage episode 465202500 series 2897755
Meshach Harvey, also known as Shy-L7, comes from a deeply musical family. He has been playing music since the age of four. His father founded the legendary Canadian reggae bands Messenjah and Crack of Dawn. His uncle played for the iconic Jamaican reggae group Toots and the Maytals.
Music runs in the family—his sister is an incredible folk singer, one of his brothers is a talented African djembe player, and another brother is both a skilled rapper and guitarist.
As for me, I started out playing drums before moving to piano. In high school, I was part of a rock/reggae band called Paradigm. Around that time, I began writing songs, and in 2012, I started writing raps. I recorded my first rap studio session in 2015 with Jamal Harvey.
In 2017, I formed The Mindful MCs, a hip-hop group focused on mental health awareness. I also worked with Bryan Bravo of The Masterminds on Latin hip-hop, releasing several singles and music videos.
Since 2020, I’ve been collaborating on music with my uncle Carl Harvey, and I’ve been working with my producer Dennis Nieves since 2019. Currently, I’ve completed a single called "Stone Mountain," which is set for release on February 6.
I am neurodivergent and live with bipolar type 1 disorder, which has played a significant role in my life and experiences.
