Britain cedes sovereignty of Chagos Islands

Britain has relinquished its last colony in Africa, signing a deal with Mauritius that cedes the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands.

But it will be allowed to maintain a highly strategic joint American-British military base on one of the islands for the next century, something its five eyes partners, including Australia have welcomed.

So what does the deal mean for Chagossians who've long wanted to return to their homeland after being forcibly removed by Britain?
