A decision on whether to extend the life of a major liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in WA's north-west became an election issue as an independent candidate in Fremantle came close to pipping the Labor incumbent due to a campaign against the project.

Woodside wants to extend the life of its North West Shelf project until 2070 but it still needs approval from the federal government after a decision was delayed by the previous environment minister.
