Israel plans to call up 60,000 reservists and extend the service of 20,000 more - as it prepares a takeover of Gaza City, and intensifies its assaults against Hamas.

Human rights groups and the UN warn the offensive will deepen the humanitarian crisis, saying it will lead to mass killings of civilians and destruction of infrastructure vital to the survival of the population.
