What does black romance look like in the vast Black diaspora? I was happy to speak with Maëlla Kancel, a romance writer and podcaster from the French-speaking Carribean island of Guadalupe. Now living in France, Maëlla and I had a chance to discuss a wide array of topics such as the wide reach of Black American culture, the nuances of non-English speaking Black existence, and how romance needs to expand its borders to include non-English and Carribean Black- centered stories. We also talked a little about my debut, but the heart of the discussion was how we perceive French identity as an American. Good stuff!
