Systemic racism refers to the complex network of systemic policies, institutional practices, and cultural norms that uphold racial inequities in society. Unlike overt racism, which can manifest in individual acts of prejudice or discrimination, systemic racism is subtle and often entrenched in various institutions, making it challenging to identify and combat. In the United States, this form of racism affects a multitude of sectors, including education, healthcare, and the criminal justice system.

Historically, systemic racism has had deep roots in the founding of the nation, where laws and public policies explicitly favored white citizens while marginalizing people of color. For instance, the legacy of redlining, discriminatory housing practices, and unequal educational funding has led to stark disparities in wealth accumulation and opportunity. Black individuals and other minorities have often found themselves limited by these policies, facing barriers that do not affect their white counterparts to the same degree.
