It’s been a huge week of news ahead of the biggest races of the year. On the eve of the Indy 500 some of the Team Penske Executive have been shown the door as the fallout continues from its latest saga. Two of its cars failed tech inspections after qualifying and have been sent to the back of the grid. Rusty steps through the past week (what the heck is an attenuator anyway?) and Roger Penske’s bid to restore integrity. You’ll hear a little of The Captain who spoke with Jamie Little for the Indycar on Fox coverage. Then Matt Hickey from Code Sports and the Daily Tele dials in for a preview of Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix. The bold pass by Max Verstappen on Oscar Piastri last week at Imola, Charles Leclerc’s chances of going back-to-back for Ferrari at this legendary race and how the driver’s gathered to preview the new F1 movie in the lead-up….except Max….he was busy iRacing. And what if we park all the neg on socials for a minute and just thought objectively, we’d see some real positives from James Warburton’s return to the top job in Supercars. Rusty shares his thoughts on Warbo’s 2nd coming and why it makes sense right now. Matt Payne is back on the pod fresh from his Sunday Supercars victory in Tasmania. The Penrite racer talks about that epic finish (he won by 0.05) and whether he could have kept Broc Feeney behind him for much longer? Plus how much it means to some of the former 888 team members in the Grove squad! We also look ahead to the next couple of rounds in Perth and Darwin - what he thinks of their chances there? Then TA2 Category Manager ‘Matty Mack’ (MacKelden) joins us with the ink still drying on this week’s deal to acquire Trans Am. Why it’s important to still have some separation between the two despite the awesome combined field recently at Bathurst. How they stepped in to help fill a void on the support bill at Waneroo and the nice balance they seem to have struck between rowing their own boat and working alongside Supercars at some marquee events. It’s a Matt-a-thon on this edition of the Garage shortcast. Get into it! Tickford Racing’s Thomas Randle returns to the Garage for a Tassie Supercars preview ahead of this weekend’s round. Will his pole setting pace at Symmons Plains in 2024 carry over to this weekend? What impact will the new format have and the T word - tyres! How Randle’s piano skills impressed Harry Connick Jnr at a train station of all places!! And warming up for the weekend with a ripper GT3 drive in Sydney. Then for the 2nd half of the ‘shorty’ we welcome Matt Hickey to the show. The Daily Telegraph F1 correspondent talks about Jack Doohan’s sideways shift, Oscar Piastri’s inner strength and a challenge for the FIA leadership. Cue the Miami Vice theme song (Rusty still has a white suit and apricot t shirt from that era) as we debrief Miami F1 and preview the Supercars action on the Apple Isle. Rusty’s homework is always late….err sorry that’s an old one. Award winning journo Paul Gover from Race News ( https://www.race.news/ ) joins us for a state of the Motorsport nation…the world really. Lando Norris won’t give it up easily but PG reckons his McLaren teammate and series leader Oscar Piastri is the better driver for the F1 World Title fight. The Webber effect: how Mark can make a difference while Oscar treads new ground with the eyes of the world watching on. Why the FIA should do some navel gazing right now even though the organisation has a history of not worrying about what the troops or constituents think. And the hunt for a new Supercars CEO - the kind of credentials needed for the top job and the qualities the candidate should bring to the table. Sitting in an aircraft hangar and recounting awesome stories with one of the most respected Team Owners in Motorsport. We’ve wanted to do this one for a while and we’re so glad Steve Horne agreed to come on. How he went from watching the New Zealand Grand Prix as a youngster to working in some of the biggest pit lanes on the planet! Leaving home with an Accounting qualification to work in racing in the UK. Meeting his wife Christine and taking a gamble on the US. Guiding Bobby Rahal to a memorable Indy 500 win, Jim Trueman’s influence and galvanizing Truesports team of 100 staff to proudly make their own cars. Plus the little known story of Ferrari’s Indycar. How Steve lead the project and meeting Enzo. This is a captivating convo and because Steve typically flies under the radar (not literally) he hasn’t shared them all that often. Someone needs to write his book! Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know who you want to hear from on Rusty's Garage. There’s two guests for this special Australian Grand Prix-view. First up Guenther Steiner. He’s back on Rusty’s Garage ahead of the F1 season opener. We get Guenther’s observations of the talented rookies lining up on grid this year and how Oscar Piastri might just break the Aussie podium drought at home. How difficult it is to manage two No. 1 drivers….will Zak Brown end up with a few more greys in 2025? Plus the hype around Hamilton. There’s so much excitement about Lewis and Ferrari. Does Steiner think Formula 1’s most famous team can give the 7-time World Champion what he needs for more success? And after the break Rusty chats to Australian Grand Prix CEO Travis Auld at Albert Park. What’s new for ‘25 now it’s back to round 1 on the calendar? How the fans will get to experience a very special celebration IF we all do the right thing. There’s a great vibe in Melbourne. It feels like F1 has taken over the city with reminders of the race on billboards everywhere! How, like the Australian Tennis Open, this event has become a darling in the Victorian major event offering and the ROI it’s now giving tax payers. If you can’t be trackside catch all the action on Ten Sport from 11.30am on Friday, 10am Saturday and Sunday is massive kicking off at 8.30am. Don’t worry Russell got even. It’s a great story! Fitting that we’re releasing this ep on the eve of a new Formula One season. Max, through sheer determination and his early grasp of forming lasting commercial relationships, made it to F1. By his own admission his time there was brief. And why it almost marked the end of his career as a professional racer. Plus the early days growing in the north of Italy, racing karts against lots of great names and the special momento he kept from his friend Ayrton Senna. This is an epic chat with some good life and racing lessons from a one of the most driven and passionate competitors you’re ever likely to meet. Chaz Mostert and Hayden Paddon are back on the pod but this time in opposing corners ahead of the Race of Champions (ROC)! Mozzie has been given a late call up to join the All Stars team and reckon’s he needs some advice from Hayden. For Paddon the chance to go head-to-head in Sydney with an icon of rallying in Sebastien Loeb was too good an opportunity to miss. So who has the edge? Circuit racers or the Rally and Rallycross stars? Plus Hayden talks about tackling the 2025 Australian Rally Championship with the program shifting into top gear after ROC. And what Chaz and Walkinshaw Andretti United learned after the opening Supercars round at Sydney Motorsport Park as they gear up for Round 2 at the Grand Prix in Melbourne. An Aussie speedway star with a seriously impressive record. We’ve been wanting to get Robbie Farr on the pod for a while and he doesn’t disappoint. The influence of family (he started going to oval tracks like the Sydney Showground and Liverpool when he was just weeks old) and how he harnessed a bit of a ‘wild’ approach in his early years to become the complete package. Is the story of fudging birth dates to get a racing license an urban myth? How karting in his teens, when Mark Webber and Craig Lowndes were starting out, nearly lead to Formula Ford and a potential circuit racing path. The gripping yarn of driving a midget (speedcar) and learning that his car owner had saved his Mum’s life years earlier! And reflections of some of the teams he’s raced for in iconic cars that will bring memories for Speedway fans flooding back. Strap in and enjoy the ride.
