Manage episode 488791527 series 2478638
Co-hosting our special Hour of Power this week is one of the youngest MPs in Victoria’s Parliament — a fierce advocate for animals, equality, and progressive policy — it’s Georgie Purcell MP!
Georgie Purcell is a Member of the Victorian Legislative Council, representing the Northern Victoria Region for the Animal Justice Party, elected in 2022 at just 30 y/o.
Prior to entering Parliament, she worked in communications, advocacy, and policy — and has a strong background in animal welfare campaigning.
Georgie is one of the most openly progressive MPs in the Vic Parliament, outspoken on animal rights, gender equality, reproductive rights, and LGBTQIA+ inclusion.
She has shared her experiences of online abuse, slut-shaming and misogyny, using her platform to advocate for safer political spaces, particularly for women and queer-identifying people.
Georgie is also a bi+ woman and proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, frequently championing issues of visibility and intersectionality.
Joining her for our Hour of Power is her partner in both life and politics — Federal Labor MP for Macnamara and a strong ally of our community — welcome back, Josh Burns MP!
Josh Burns is the Federal Labor Member for Macnamara, covering inner-city suburbs including Southbank, St Kilda and Caulfield. He was elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2022.
A member of Labor’s progressive faction, he has been a strong supporter of LGBTQIA+ rights, climate action, and community-led policies.
He previously worked for then–Premier Daniel Andrews and has Jewish heritage, which he draws upon in his advocacy for social justice and interfaith inclusion.
Josh has spoken regularly about the importance of Pride, inclusive schools, and trans rights, and has marched in Midsumma and IDAHOBIT events throughout his term.
He and Georgie Purcell are a publicly supportive couple who frequently collaborate across party lines to model respectful political dialogue — and today are the first duo to co-host the Saturday Magazine “Hour of Power.”
