Episode Description: Jessica B. Harris may have been born and raised in New York City, but she has Tennessee roots through her father and has spent much of her life split between homes in the Northeast and the South – specifically New Orleans. For more than fifty years, she has been a college professor, a writer, and a lecturer, and her many books have earned her a reputation as an authority on food of the African Diaspora, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the James Beard Foundation. A few years back, Netflix adapted her book, High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America , into a 4 part docuseries. And I’m very proud to say that she’s a longtime contributor to Southern Living with a regular column called The Welcome Table. This episode was recorded in the Southern Living Birmingham studios, and Sid and Jessica talked about her mother’s signature mac and cheese, the cast-iron skillet she’d be sure to save if ever her house were on fire, and her dear friend, the late New Orleans chef Leah Chase. As the late Billionaire and two-time political candidate Ross Perot once said, "If you see a snake, just kill it; don’t appoint a committee of snakes.” Today’s film is an attempt by a High School teacher who tries to make a snake out of a student, and in turn makes himself a real-life snake, dismantling his life as he knows it. Are you following along yet? Good, because it is time to vote, and in this episode, we pick Flick, a teen flick, that is, of course. It's the 1999 film that pits student against student, brother against sister, and a sad Midwest teacher against himself, so grab your ballot, its the teen satire, ELECTION - Let’s GO! This film is directed by multi-time Academy Award Winner and Nominee Alexander Payne and features Reese Witherspoon in her audition for Elle Woods, Chris Klein in his debut role, and Matthew Broderick in yet another classic shower scene. Is there anything funnier than politics in America right now? We think not! In this episode, Amy & Dan discuss Ross Perot’s historic run as a third-party candidate, critique the use of voiceover in film, and avoid talking about the elephant in the room that is the 2024 US presidential election. How exactly does one tame a shrew? It’s hard to say, but it does feel like a job for an Aussie, doesn’t it? This week on Save the Last Pod, it’s the 1999 classic high school Shakespeare adaptation that launched the career of everybody’s favorite heartthrob from down under – it’s 10 Things I Hate About You! This is a big film in the teen movie genre so we brought in a big guest. In this episode Amy and Dan are joined by a very special guest Heather A. Taylor, TV writer, podcaster and author of the brand new audiobook, “ Know Your Newlywed ” (available Dec 10 from Simon & Schuster) to talk all things Kat and Pat. What do the Halloween franchise and Everything Everywhere All At Once have in common? Aside from the OG final girl, Jamie Lee Curtis, it's the multiverse! Sort of! We enter the mid-way point of the biggest horror-slasher franchise and reunite with the once former teen scream Queen, Laurie Strode, back from the dead - or was she ever gone? - in Halloween H2O: 20 Years Later. Let’s go! In the final episode of Hallowteen 2024, Amy and Dan get into a classic, remixed, of course, with 90s teen idols Michelle Williams and Josh Hartnett in his first film role ever! Also—LL Cool J, the world in September of 1998, and an in-depth explanation from Amy on how the thirteen films of the Halloween catalog work. Also, why is there no water in H2O? John Carpenter, we have a bone to pick with you about this. Are you enjoying what you're hearing? Your thoughts are not just important. They mean more than John Hughes to us. In the hierarchy of evil there are all manner of lesser imps and demons, but today’s movie tells us that Hell is a teenage girl. This week on Save the Last Pod, we’re talking about the 2009 late-emo, sleeper cult classic Jennifer’s Body. In this episode, Amy & Dan talk about succubi, whether or not Jenji Kohen and Diablo Cody are the same person (they’re not), if emo was cool in 2009 (it wasn’t) and how Hole deserves another look. Clear your history of stale Megan Fox takes and come correct to the film that will surely change your mind. I like you. Do you like me? Is there anything scarier than commercial air travel? TSA lines, airplane bathrooms, broken seat back entertainment systems – oh no! New Line took a gamble on that premise and spun it into 6 feature films. This week on Save the Last Pod, we’re covering the Rube Goldberg machine that started the franchise – it’s Final Destination! In this episode, Amy & Dan talk about transportation fears, near-death experiences and the fine line between dreams and reality. It’s such a scary episode that Amy forgot to mention her crush on Devon Sawa. Are you enjoying what you're hearing? Your thoughts are important. Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary… say it again. We dare you. Candyman, Candyman… say it again. We dare you. Of course, you know nothing bad will come of it if you do, but deep in the recesses of your mind, you suspect that these aren’t just urban legends. Right? That’s the question posed by this week’s movie… Urban Legend! We’re back for Hallowteen, and this week we find ourselves talking about the diminishing returns of the movies that followed in the wake of the 1996 teen slasher classic, Scream! Your favorite goths return to talk about the difference between scary stories and urban legends, Pop Rocks, Joshua Jackson and appropriate slasher costumes. Don’t turn on the light, put your headphones on and ignore the obvious chaos around you as we take you back to 1998 when Paula Cole was an easy punchline and landlines still played prominent roles in film. Is Heathers a horror movie? Of course not. If you agree, you should rate us 5 Stars and write why it’s not in the comments! We’ll read the best ones on air. The Summer Olympics are in full swing but, like most good Americans, we’re more excited for the winter games so we can watch hockey – specifically Goodwill Games hockey. This week on Save the Last Pod, it’s a Disney teen movie sequel to the youth sports classic that banged so hard it spawned an NHL franchise. It’s D2: The Mighty Ducks! In this episode, Amy and Dan welcome back several familiar faces to the podcast, talk about NHL 94, and argue about the origin of the Bash Brothers. Amy also dishes on her favorite Ducks and she debates with Dan: Knucklepuck vs Annexation of Puerto Rico. The Summer Olympics is in full swing, and we are celebrating with a teen movie that sheds light on not one but two more modern Olympic sports. Yes, we are talking about surfing and skateboarding and specifically about how a rag-tag group of teen surfers in the Dogtown area of Venice Beach unintentionally innovated and launched skateboarding into the mainstream by sneaking into empty pools during a 1970s-something summer drought. Why, hella, yes we are talking about LORDS OF DOGTOWN. Let’s go!! In this episode, Amy and Dan welcome back familiar faces to the podcast, talk about the Summer Olympics and the Bone Brigade, and question whether there is room for innovation anywhere in the world anymore. Plus! Amy dishes on what Rob Dyrdek said to her when she interviewed him for a potential job she didn’t get, Heath Ledger’s teeth, who of the cast knew how to skate, and where the real Stacey, Tony, and Jay are now. While jeans are super American, this movie was not shot anywhere in America, but it stars four American TV show-led sweethearts, and one of them is named America! Have you figured out what movie we are talking about yet? Of course, you have, you are a teen Queen just like us! This week on Save the Last Pod, it's the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants - LET’S GO! In this episode, Amy & Dan discuss all the dungarees, from mom jeans to J’NCOs and everything in between. They reminisce about their favorite pair, the ones they never splurged for, and find out what Amy’s mom has to do with Dan’s current jean collection. Plus! Amy’s getting so old she forgot when she turned twenty-one, and while it wasn’t the year this movie came out, it wasn’t soon after, which also means this was one teen movie your hosts didn’t see till today. Experience The Sisterhood with fresh eyes almost twenty years later, and maybe someday soon we will even watch the sequel. Are you enjoying what you're hearing? Your thoughts are not just important. This week on Save the Last Pod, we detour the teen movie-watching experience to the art of documentary filmmaking and discuss the newly released feature film from 1980’s teen centerpiece, Andrew McCarthy. A documentary so historical, so thought-provoking it can only be about one thing - the founding teens of teen movies - Emilio! Rob! Judd! Tom! Molly! Ally! Demi! It’s BRATS! The Brat Pack Documentary. Let’s go!! Amy and Dan delve into Hollywood's generations of teen and young heartthrob factions in this episode. They draw a fascinating line from the Brat Pack to the P-Posse, the Glee Teens, and the newly minted Rat Men. Plus! Step back to the summer of 1994, a time when your parents were keen on sending you to computer camp, but you had other plans. You decided to hire a con man, a former drama teacher, to pose as a camp counselor and create your own camp, where the only rule was to have fun. This week on Save the Last Pod, we're taking you back to that unforgettable summer, filled with firecrackers, car repairs, rooftop jumps, and even lima beans! It’s the 30th Anniversary of the nostalgia-inducing, rebellious teen action-comedy, CAMP NOWHERE! Let’s go!! In this episode, Amy and Dan discuss the future hotties of teen idoldom Jonathan Jackson, Andrew Keegan, and Jessica Alba in their first-ever film credit and where they and the rest of this cast are now. Plus—CULTS! That’s right. We debate the question: Is camp a cult? If Allison Mack is involved, it might just be. Space travel, getting grounded, doctors who wear crop-tops, and 5:15 fly-overs—anything can happen when you are nowhere, including having the greatest summer of your life. Camp evokes positive memories for most of us – playing sports, swimming in a lake, maybe having your first kiss. But for some of us, camp was work. This week on Save the Last Pod, camp sucks, because we’re talking about the 2003 Disney forced child labor film Holes! In this episode, Amy and Dan discuss a Louis Sachar classic YA book turned movie. They also reminisce about Scholastic Book Fairs, Pizza Huts, and they debate exactly how many holes we all have. For millennials, there is not much more of a triggering question than, “Team Edward or Team Jacob?” and it's the one we are asking ourselves this week on Save the Last Pod! Round up all your Twi-Hard friends and family, we are flying up the trees of the Pacific Northwest to get into the Kristen Stewart, Edward Cullen Vampire Fantasy Romance that started a mega-franchise and was even featured on Burger King crowns everywhere. It’s TWILIGHT! Let’s go! In this episode, Amy and Dan debate why the vegetarian, baseball-swinging, glow-in-the-sunlight vampires, the Cullen family, still go to High School after one hundred and eight years. They reminisce on what it was like getting asked to prom, and wonder - what is going on with Taylor Lautner’s wig? Amy and Dan go down the rabbit hole of cinema’s favorite seductive character, the vampire film, but don’t worry there is enough to go around about this coded film about celibacy, desire, and human pheromones. The clock is ticking and that means it is time for a NEW episode of Save the Last Pod! That’s right prom kings and queens, it's our chance to say, “Meet me out by the bike racks, 3 PM!” In this episode, Amy and Dan discuss real memories of hall brawls, teen bullies, their very noticeable height differences as a married couple, and question the believability of a school store. If you woke up tomorrow naked, next to a New York Ranger only to discover you somehow missed the last 17 years of your life, what would you do? This week on Save the Last Pod, we discuss the best case scenario in the kind of time travel/sort of body switching 2004 classic, 13 Going on 30! In this episode, Amy & Dan talk turk on Ben and Jen – rather, Ben and Jens. They discuss the Thriller music video, physical media appreciation (again), class picture day and all things Ruffalo. It’s the 20th anniversary of 13 Going on 30 so, if you haven’t seen it since 2004, pop in the DVD then pop in your earbuds and let us take you back to the early aughts when flip phones ruled and magazine editors still lived in penthouse apartments. Trigger Warning, Content Warning, Dark Dawson Warning! This week on Save the Last Pod, Dan raises Amy, another angsty teen movie. This time, it may be angstier than last week’s film. It's the 2002 art-house satire RULES OF ATTRACTION! Let’s go! In this episode, hear how the modern-day restaurant app Dorsia paved the way for the character of Sean Bateman, brother of the one-and-only American Psycho. Amy & Dan also chat about those theme parties you attended in college, the holier-than-thou cast of 7th Heaven, and Dan admits he really wouldn’t leave Amy for Shannyn Sossaman, or would he? Take a trip in reverse back down memory lane to this tiny college in New Hampshire where television’s good kids, Dawson Leary, Kevin Arnold, and Mary Camden, turn baaaaddd. How else would James Van Der Beek, Fred Savage, and Jessica Biel live in a James Easton Ellis world? Hear this and more on this week’s rager of an episode. Is this podcast all you lust for? Happy belated Rex Manning Day, y’all! If you know, you know – and since you’re a listener of Save the Last Pod, you probably know. This week on Save the Last Pod, we’re running on the angst and vibes of the 1995 cult classic, Empire Records! In this episode, Amy & Dan talk about music, baby. They talk soundtracks and physical media. They talk about how music unites us and how vibes are sometimes all you need. They also talk deleted scenes, shaved heads and about how this film almost featured a Spiderman. Load up your 6-disc changer and pop those headphones on and let us transport you back to 90’s Delaware! Hey, how about a 5 star review for your favorite teen movie podcast? Do you ever wish you could go back in time to your salad days? To the dog days of summer when you desperately needed to learn how to play baseball to make friends and impress your step-dad? This week on Save the Last Pod, it’s a shot of nostalgia with a milk chaser. In this episode, Amy & Dan are talking about the 1993 pre-teen baseball classic, “The Sandlot”. Listen as your favorite hosts debate why there aren’t any teen baseball movies, discuss the pitch perfect kid casting and disclose how many state championship teams Amy actually played on. You’re killing me, Smalls! Lace up those cleats, pack a fat lip of Big League Chew and let us take you back to 1962, when baseball was America’s pastime. Is this podcast a home run? If so, rate us 5 Stars! Like last week and the week before, if you leave us a 5-STAR REVIEW, we will read it on the air. This week on Save the Last Pod, we travel to 2006, when the biggest statement of the year was: “John Tucker Must Die.” And that’s ironic because that is the title of our teen movie this week! It’s the Brittany Snow-Jesse Metcalfe-Ashanti-Jenny McCarthy banger, “JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE.” Let’s go! In this episode, Amy & Dan pit hip-hop royals Beyonce & Jay-Z and Ashanti & Nelly against one another, talk armpit farts, red thongs, and webcams, and dissect the slightly regressive undertones presented in this female-helmed film. Also, did you hear that they are making a follow-up to this classic? That’s right. The hosts of the hallway also make a bid to Hollywood with their ideas for where to take the second iteration of this teen-revenge comedy. We just hope that Penn Badgley will rock the same hairdo in the sequel. Please and thank you! Is this podcast a slam dunk? If so, rate us 5 Stars! A dead dame unravels a tangled web of hot head smack slingers, jocks, stoners, loners and hardboiled gumshoes who scrap it up chasing after a brick of white gold in today’s classic 2005 high school noir, Brick. Listen up, turds, because it’s probably the last high school noir we’ll cover. In this episode, Amy & Dan talk about why they don’t make noirs anymore, as well as JGL’s journey from 3rd Rock to tough guy, and Rian Johnson’s journey from Sundance darling to Knives Out hotboi. Take off those noisy shoes and those tiny glasses, unravel this ball of yarn and let us take you on a journey down this 2005 rabbit hole. Welp, Oscar season 2024 came and went and no teen movie won the little gold man but that’s ok because we’ve got another episode of Save the Last Pod for ya! In this episode Amy and Dan recap their Oscar celebrations, look back on the 2023 film scene and reaffirm that there is still love for movies. And maybe next year a raunchy teen movie will take top prize? This week we dig deep into the vault to bring you an encore episode of WEIRD SCIENCE, the John Hughes movie that most definitely did not earn him an Oscar nomination but was apart of a mega year for his career. Does this podcast deserve an Oscar? If so, rate us 5 Stars! Just like last week and the week before, if you leave us a comment nominating your favorite teen movie or teen idols for an Oscar, we will read it on the air. It’s Oscar Week in Hollywood, dweebs! This week, we honor the Little Gold Man by bringing you to Sacramento circa 2002! That’s right, early aughts are now considered a “period piece,” babe. Released in 2017, it’s the even bigger snub (IMO) from auteur writer/director Greta Gerwig, we’re talking LADY BIRD! In this episode, Amy presses Dan on why he dubbed himself with the name “Fresh,” and our first listener review! Shout-out to KevDogggy, with three G’s. Your favorite Dave Matthews fans also discuss the Chicago River incident, what it was like to grow up in the shadow of 9/11, and that weird feeling of “home” when you must leave yours to feel whole. Yes, we get a little emotional! But don’t worry we still nerd out over Tim-o-tee and laugh at this film’s exquisite, should’ve-won-an-Oscar dialogue. Does this podcast deserve an Oscar? Last week we covered a progressive Gen Z film about sisterhood, love and friendship that probably doesn’t pass the Bechdel Test, and this week we’re following it up with a Boomer teen movie about a retired colonel and his boy servant that absolutely does not pass the Bechdel Test. There’s a lot of talk about smelling women though. It’s Scent of a Woman! Hooah! In this episode, Amy & Dan talk Gigli, Wayfair furniture, Al Pacino movies, upstate New York boarding schools and CK One. Snuggle into your bed at the Waldorf Astoria, order a $24 hamburger and let us take you back to 1993 and the role that won Al Pacino his only Academy Award.
