The fossil record is considered to be the primary foundational evidence that validates evolution. Geologists have thought it seems to paint a picture of long ages and slow gradual processes in which species grew to be more complex over time. This perspective was a foundational viewpoint for Darwin when he developed his evolutionary theory. But is this the picture the fossil record really paints of the past? Are there clues in the fossil record that suggest what happening in the past was very different?
