In this episode I talk with Gary Silberstein, an absolutely fantastic gentleman I met last year. This guy is a legend, honestly. Though he is 79 and I’m 25, when we’re hanging out I always feel like I’m talking to someone younger than me, just much wiser. We’ve surfed the point in Santa Cruz together, he’s introduced me to some of the original members of the Big Stick Surfing club, he's showed me how to cast gold rings in his garage, and we’ve had a lot of great chats over coffee on subjects ranging from science to philosophy. He is a retired professor, who researched and taught developmental biology at the University of California at Santa Cruz for nearly 30 years. Growing up in San Francisco in the 50’s, he got hooked on surfing at Ocean Beach and in Santa Cruz, a passion that became, as he describes it, True North on his compass. His experience as a surfer taught him at a young age what commitment really means. That committed mindset is evident in so many of his stories, from committing to graduate school to intentionally teach himself discipline, committing to his love of surfing, and committing to doing good work on each and every project set before him.. He embodies that ability to focus entirely on what is at hand and exemplifies that living and working hard in the present-moment gives opportunities the chance to find you. I left this conversation ready to take control of my life and I think you will too. Enjoy.
