Instagram isn’t designed to be a storefront—but that hasn’t stopped creative entrepreneurs from turning it into one.Today’s question comes from Tasha in Kansas City, who’s been flipping thrifted and vintage clothes for a while. She’s sold through all the usual channels—Poshmark, eBay, Depop—but lately she’s seeing more and more sellers skip those platforms entirely and build resale shops directly on Instagram.
They’re posting curated items, running flash sales through Stories, and handling payments through Venmo, PayPal, or even Zelle. It’s quick, personal, and a little chaotic—but for some, it works.
So, could this approach be viable as a business? Let’s take a look at the pros, cons, and how to pull it off—without getting overwhelmed or burned.
“Hi team, I’ve been thrifting and flipping clothes for a while now—mostly on Poshmark and eBay—but I recently noticed a bunch of people selling exclusively through Instagram. I’m talking full-on resale shops, just in Stories or posts, no external website. It honestly surprised me, because Instagram isn’t really built for transactions. Still, they seem to have loyal followings and consistent sales. Could this work as a real sales channel? What would be the best way to run a resale business only through Instagram, and what are the risks or limitations I should know about? I feel like I’m missing something and would love some guidance.”
