Most of the world think music is made the same way. A person writes a song, hits the studio, releases it, and just so happenly it takes the world by storm. But, now,, more than ever, music is made by committee, with the corporate planning and precision as rolling out a new fast food item, or new car. As a sometimes ad and marketing guy—I can identify the craft in that, but the art in it is something you can only see if you squint your eyes.
But, the idea of pop music being a consciously pleasurable experience is not exclusive to the corporate cogs. It’s a medium, it’s a genre, it’s meant to be enjoyed. And sometimes, even often, it’s designed for your pleasure, for your catharsis…and the art part is free of charge. That’s the difference. My next guest wonders and ponders these things, he’s a songwriter, he’s a producer, and he has a new song
