Anthony Albanese has become the first Prime Minister to win back-to-back elections in more than two decades, picking up seats in the process, including Opposition Leader Peter Dutton's own.

Mr Dutton's surprise loss in Dickson, and the Liberal Party's broader political misfortune has thrown the party into serious soul searching, as it reckons with the result and decides who will take over as leader.
