Africa Melane is joined by Thabile Nkunjana, a Senior Economist at The National Agricultural Marketing Council in Pretoria, to unpack the debate surrounding South Africa’s official unemployment rate, which sits at 32.9% for the first quarter of 2025. The conversation follows comments by Capitec CEO Gerrie Fourie, who claimed the true rate could be closer to 10% if informal and self-employed workers were properly counted. This claim has been strongly rejected by Stats SA.
