In this episode, I chat with Fabi about losing her dad at 16 – right in the middle of her GCSEs. His passing was sudden and traumatic, happening in their family home, and it changed everything. We reflect on the struggles of grieving while still in school and how isolating it can feel when no one quite knows how to support you.

Fabi shares how she found strength in her support network – from her close-knit family, who, despite grieving in their own ways, came together to help each other through the hardest moments, to her friends who were a constant source of comfort and understanding. We also bond over dark humour as a coping mechanism and laugh about those odd, often bizarre grief conversations that only make sense to others who’ve been through it. If you’re not crying, you may as well laugh at the absurdity of it all, right?

We also talk about how tricky it is to tell new people about our loved ones passing. Sometimes we bend the truth or use humour to avoid the awkwardness. And don’t even get us started on the grammar of death – “dead,” “died,” “passed away” – we’ve got our favourites and least favourites.

Fabi now works as a paediatric intensive care nurse, and we explore how so many of us who’ve experienced trauma end up in caring professions. Is it healing, or is it madness? We’ll never know!

We also touch on the beauty of finding "grief friends" – people who just get it without needing explanations. It’s raw, real connection in a world that often doesn’t know what to say.

Whether you're grieving, supporting someone who is, or just curious about how loss shapes lives, this episode is full of laughs, real talk, and the strange hope that comes from sharing stories.
