How Do I Pray When I Am Hurting?

When pain grips your heart, even the simplest prayer can feel impossible. But God doesn’t need fancy words—He just wants your heart, just as it is. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” In your silence, in your tears, in your confusion—He is near.

Start with honesty. If all you can say is, “Jesus, help me,” that’s enough. He understands. Romans 8:26 reminds us that when we don’t know what to pray, “the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” You're not alone in your struggle.

You can pour out your emotions. Cry, whisper, or write it down—tell God how you feel. He already knows, and He deeply cares. 1 Peter 5:7 invites you to “cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

In your pain, prayer becomes less about words and more about presence. Simply sit with God. Let Him hold you. Healing may not come instantly, but comfort will. He is the God who sees, the God who stays, and the God who heals.

You’re not forgotten. You’re deeply loved—even in your hurt.
