S1AEP3: The Hidden Self Behind Every Creative Story
Manage episode 500544296 series 3676946
Every character, brand, or story you create has a truth it carries beneath the surfaceâa hidden self that quietly shapes every decision, conflict, and breakthrough moment. In this episode, we dive deeper into the Foundational Spark âWho?â, exploring what I call the Mirror Moment. Youâll discover how this moment works in both real and fictional contexts, why itâs a powerful tool for storytellers, and how you can use it to connect more deeply with your audience.
đ In This Episode, You'll Discover:- What a Mirror Moment is, and why itâs one of the most revealing points in a story.
- How three very different âWho?â examplesâTexas Toast from âDairy Dairy Cowtown,â the fictional town I created, Walter White from âBreaking Bad,â and the Apple brandâreflect their hidden self.
- Why understanding your characterâs inner truth can guide dialogue, plot, and even branding decisions.
- A practical framework for uncovering your own Mirror Moment, whether youâre telling stories in fiction, business, or personal projects.
- August 6, 1991 â Tim Berners-Lee publishes the first website, describing the World Wide Web project. His âwhoâ was someone who saw information as something meant to be shared and connectedâevery link a potential story path.
- August 11, 1942 â Hedy Lamarr is perhaps the perfect embodimentâan actress who embraced being many things at once. Her âwhoâ was both glamorous star and brilliant inventor, showing how creativity thrives across boundaries. Along with composer George Antheil, she developed and patented a radio-controlled torpedo guidance system using frequency hoppingâa breakthrough that later became foundational for modern wireless technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
- August 11, 1973 â DJ Kool Herc found his âwhoâ in the break. He played records in a way that revealed the instrumental break as the moment where people came alive, where their true selves emerged on the dancefloor. By extending that moment between two turntables, he gave people more time to be themselves. Hip-hop grew from recognizing that the spark lives in the spaces between.
- August 11, 1999 â The last total solar eclipse of the 20th century was visible across Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, becoming one of the most-watched eclipses in history. In that moment of totality, everyone became an artist capturing the uncapturable. The âwhoâ here is humanity itself, united in witnessing something bigger than ourselves.
This weekâs challenge is The Character InterviewâUncensored.
Write in first person, as your character. Let them speak freelyâramble, contradict, and surprise you. Somewhere inside is a truth theyâve never shared out loud.
Set a 10-minute timer and answer:
- Whatâs the most important truth about you that few people know?
- What do you tell yourself during the quiet hours of the night?
- If you could rewrite one moment from your past, what would it beâand why keep it?
Then ask: What âweaknessâ is actually their hidden superpower?

When I first started exploring the âhidden selfâ idea, I realized itâs something we often avoidânot just for characters, but for ourselves. It can feel vulnerable to name the truth underneath. But the more Iâve done it, the more I see how it unlocks stories, deepens relationships, and makes creative choices feel almost inevitable. If this feels challenging, youâre in exactly the right place.
