To this day, Asian Americans are too often an after-thought or even invisibilized in the political arena, but the AAPI Victory Alliance is trying to change that by elevating voices, building partnerships and supporting AAPI political leaders of the future. Not an easy task, but it has to be done especially at a time when Asians have come under constant attack. The trade war between the U.S. and the world isn’t just an abstract concept. It’s something very real and painful for small businesses, especially those that rely on products from China. In this episode, we talk to two Asian American female small business owners who are fearful about their future because of the wild swings in tariff policy. First it was a 145% tariff imposed by Donald Trump on all Chinese imports to the U.S.. China responded by slapping a 125% tariff on U.S, imports. But on Monday, May 12, it was announced after meetings in Switzerland, that there will be a 90 day pause on the triple digit tariffs to allow for more negotiations. Although this may seem like progress, there's apprehension about what's coming next, especially since the trade war, to many, was self-inflicted by the U.S. President. China, on the other hand, has not changed its policy nor has it agreed to any concessions or compromise. For small business owners like Elenor Mak, founder of Jilly Bing dolls and Evelyn Wang, founder of the hair care line Silverist, the uncertainty only fuels their fears and anxieties. But then, the cataclysmic LA wildfires hit and we knew we had to pivot. The destruction to homes, businesses and entire neighborhoods is so immense, it's difficult to truly understand the scale of loss. As of the date of this episode, more than 180,000 people have been displaced by the fires. More than 10,000 structures are damaged or destroyed. 11 human lives have been lost. Animals, both domestic and wild, have also been dramatically impacted. May, Kelly and Tamlyn speak with Dr. Wang about how we can all help each other through this unprecedented disaster and what each one of us can do to make a difference even in the smallest of ways. At the heart of this episode is the hotly debated issue of the "coddled" generation. These are Gen Z'ers and, now, Gen Alpha who have been overprotected by parents from the real world with all of it's challenges, pain, and dangers. But ironcially, these same kids have been severely underprotected from social media. According to psychologist and NYU professor, Jonathan Haidt, this combination has led to a multitude of problems including depression and self-harm as well as a complete lack of accountibility. Social media has created an entire generation of addicted "keyboard warriors", who hide behind their devices and say whatever they want without reprecussions. This behaviour manifests in other areas. May shares her firsthand experience as a university professor who has battled this lack of accountability among students. Recently, she was the target of unfounded incidenary remarks and when she asked for university support, it was rejected. May, Kelly and Tamlyn talk about the reasons behind this kind of hostile and evasive behavior, and what we can do to slow and, perhaps, even avert the further breakdown of civility. For many of you who have been watching and listening to this show, you've gotten to know May's Golden Retriever, Eggy, pretty well. She would often make cameo appearances during the show knowing exactly where the camera was. Eggy's story, like many rescue dogs, is amazingly touching and inspiring. Broadway is one of the final frontiers when it comes to more diverse representation, but change has been coming slowly but surely. Korean American composer, Helen Park, has helped shake things up in a very big and very flamboyant wave with her musical, KPOP, which had a run both off and on Broadway. The flashy musical was recently nominated for several Tony awards including best original score, one of the most competitive and coveted categories. Helen became the first Asian American female composer to ever be nominated for a Tony. Not bad for a girl who grew up in Korea thinking there was no entry into musical theatre because she didn't "fit" the standard...white, male, American.
