The Corwin Amendment was offered to the southern states before Civil War hostilities really got going, in an effort to keep the United States together, and would have enshrined the constitutional right to own slaves in perpetuity. The House of Representatives passed it, the Senate passed it, and it went to the states for ratification but the southern states, feeling very confident they would win the war quickly, instead continued with secession activity.
And we all know how that worked out.
But, what if they had just taken the deal instead? Think about how long would slavery have existed in America. Until 1880? Until 1900? Until 1920? Until 1950? And how would it eventually go away?
Talk about alternative history!
