Tolerance is one of the pillars of open societies. It allows people with different beliefs, cultures, and values to live together peacefully. But what happens when tolerance is used as a weapon — to spread hate, dismantle rights, and destroy the very freedoms it depends on?

That’s the Paradox of Tolerance, and it was introduced by philosopher Karl Popper in the 1940s.
