Pop Culture Writer Russ Burlingame joins Nicole Barlow and Ryan Pak to talk about the soundtrack to James Gunn's 2014 film, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1. It's the 1st soundtrack to ever hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200 charts with all previously released songs. It's sold over 3 million copies and was the 2nd best selling soundtrack in 2014 behind only the Frozen soundtrack. Beyond sales, the soundtrack is also partly responsible for the resurrection of the cassette tape.
We also discuss:
  • James Gunn's unorthodox method to make sure the scenes worked with the music
  • Why a limitless budget doesn't always get you the best needle drops
  • Dave Jordan - soundtrack supervisor to the entire MCU and more
