31: Part #2 - Losing farm land to renewables *UPDATE*
Manage episode 489595841 series 3584572
In episode #3, we spoke with Emily Hill from Colbinabbin, in Victoria.
Emily was detailing the proposed solar farm in their region, and what the impacts of that would look like.
Unfortunately, the solar farm has been approved; despite community pushback, including from the local council, genuine concerns from local businesses and farms, and zero consultation from the company involved, who actively avoided meeting with the affected community members.
On top of this, given that the project is to do with 'Net Zero', it comes with special, sweeping powers that effectively prohibit the community members' right to appeal this project to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
As an aside and not covered in this interview, it's also come to light that the proposal of running livestock underneath/through/around solar plants and wind turbines is causing a raft of health issues and hazards that means animals grazed in those areas are potentially not fit for processing, effectively rendering that area of land useless for anything else.
Meeting Net Zero requirements at any cost, including the removal of democratic processes, is not something most Australians would support, and yet it's happening across different sectors every day.
We are all going to be paying the price of these decisions, whether this particular example directly affects you, or not.
Talk about it, make it known, and perhaps some of these issues can be righted, and future mistakes avoided.
