So, my friends, I will be talking about the third and fourth item in this list of six steps that Abby Thatcher gave Bill W as he was composing the book, Alcoholics Anonymous, commonly referred to as The Big Book.

The third and fourth steps, from the Oxford step, are:

3. A Moral inventory.
4. Confession.
These two steps match up perfectly with the fourth and fifth steps in the current 12 step program. The Oxford third step, Moral Inventory, and the 12-step programs fourth step, made a searching and fearless moral inventory, is basically the same.

This idea of cleaning house and making room for a new way of life, is key to our recovery. Now, I know that the original 12 step program was written and designed for folks with problems with alcohol. However, this program has been adapted by, I would say, millions of people. They have discovered that the program works for any kind of problem in life. That is because the basic idea of the program is to find a new way of life through dependence on, ou Spirit and God.

The fourth step from the Oxford group is simply, confession. This step s aligns perfectly with the fifth step in the 12 step program.. We admit to God, to ourselves, and to another human being, the nature of our wrongs . Some who used this 12 are Catholics, actually use their sacrament of confession as part of this fifth step.

I shall talk about these two steps in today’s episode.
