Malaika Brooks-Smith-Lowe is a Professional Yoga therapist,
community builder, retreat facilitator and co-founder of Spice Harmony
Yoga.
She is also a doula and visual artist. She offers healing and creative services as a pathway for people to foster deeper connection with self, community and the larger world.

In this conversation, Malaika talks about her career, work and travels across the Caribbean and the US. Also about her activism, life as an Yogi, creative, being a doula and the Community she is building on the Spice Island of Grenada.

It would seem that Malaika has Yoga in her blood, as both her parents are also Yoga instructors. She talks about the need for people to treat with their bodies on and off the mat and the value of Yoga therapy, which can be tailored for each persons specific needs. Her practice incorporates treating with the body, mind, soul and spirit, where she often uses affirmation cards to assist clients on their healing journey, when incorporated into her Yoga sessions.

She touches on her Ayurvedic practice, which is about bringing balance to the body and mind, where like increases like and opposites balance. She says Yoga can bring balance, based on what is actually going on in your life.

Yoga, also helps us live consciously and be more mindful. She says it can help us listen within, observe our patterns to take corrective actions and be on the path to mindful living.

We discuss Art and her studies in Visual Arts, particularly her passion for contemporary photography. She incorporates this into her business branding, Yoga and creative projects. Malaika, talks about attending film festivals, doing Residencies across the Caribbean, exploring and unearthing her creative being.

We talk about the evolution of artist spaces and Communities which caters for experimental work in various places in the Caribbean. Malaika talks about making space to lean into and explore your love for the arts. She spoke about the power of finding Community and being around people who can help fuel, inspire and keep the fire burning for creative pursuits.

Malaika talks about Spice Harmony Yoga where she and her father are the instructors. A space where, they serve the people, with various types of classes to cater to their needs; for example chair Yoga and classes for Seniors.

We discuss the Nourish Yoga & Wellbeing Retreat held in December in Grenada, and what the 6 day retreat incorporates. Nourish Retreat is a sacred space for deep self-care, reflection, and rejuvenation in the vibrant embrace of Grenada. Through movement, meditation, journaling, art, adventure and shared wisdom, they explore the physical, energetic, mental, intuitive, and bliss bodies, bringing awareness and harmony to each layer of the human being.

Malaika talks about the five Koshas, which is the focus of this years Nourish Retreat. The journey through the five koshas, explores the layers of our being, as a pathway for self-study and wellbeing.

How does Malaika slow down to nourish her soul? She practices journaling, gratefulness, fasting, and has a habit tracker to help manage her life, among other things.

Malaika talks about her new project on the horizon the Wild Seed Sanctuary. It will be an inter- generational hub. Which will be a beautiful space with a plant-forward cafe, co-working collective space, yoga studio and event space. On the lush green gardens on her family's land.

Malaika is on a mission, living consciously, making space for living well and sharing her practice with the Community and Grenada for collective upliftment.
